Training a dog is an important part of the relationship between the pet and the owner. It is beneficial to train any dog, but it is an absolute must to train future show dogs from an early age carefully. Read here what benefits training a dog can bring. Read also how training a dog should start.
Why Should I Train my dog?
Training can be an important part of your dog’s well-being. For a dog, training is like play, which is necessary to keep it active and stimulate it physically and mentally. A dog that has sufficient activities is happier than a neglected one. A dog that has its fair share of exercise will sleep better at the end of the day. Training is also crucial for the relationship between the dog and the owner. It is a possibility to spend time together, which strengthens the emotional bond. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to have fun and relax.
How Can I Train a Dog?
It is generally accepted that a reward-based training regime gives the best results and is the most beneficial for the dog’s mental welfare. In this training method, the dog is set up to perform a given task successfully and then rewarded upon the completion of the task. This is also called positive reinforcement in behavioural psychology. On the other hand, unwanted or negative behaviour should not be punished but ignored. The dog should learn to associate that negative behaviours will not be rewarded with a reaction.
Usually, training involves a behaviour and a command. It is often the first step in training a puppy to teach simple commands such as sit and come. To train a dog, a simple command, have a treat ready. Use the treat and your hands to induce the desired movement – for instance, try to get the dog to lower its rear. When it does the task, say the command out loud and give the treat.
